Menurut laporan yang diungkapkan dalam Intelligence Report, September 2011, Symantec menyebutkan, sekitar 72 persen dari seluruh malware yang bersal dari email sepanjang bulan September lalu merupakan malware jenis polimorfik (mudah berubah bentuk) generik yang agresif.

Sejak ditemukan pertamakali, pada Juli lalu angkanya sempat naik sebesar 23,7 persen. Pada bulan Agustus jumlahnya sedikit turun jadi 18,5 persen, hingga akhirnya melonjak ke 72 persen pada bulan lalu.

“Tampak jelas bahwa penjahat cyber telah meningkatkan serangan mereka dengan sepenuhnya mengeksploitasi kelemahan dari pengamanan tradisional,” kata Paul Wood, Senioer Intelligence Analyst Symantec, 13 Oktober 2011.

Dari analisis lebih lanjut, diketahui bahwa rekayasa sosial di balik serangan ini juga ditingkatkan. “Pelaku menggunakan teknik baru seperti menyamar menjadi email dari printer atau scanner pintar yang diforward oleh rekan dalam perusahaan yang sama,” ucap Wood.

Dari sisi email spam, meskipun tingkat penyebaran spam cukup stabil selama bulan September, Symantec menemukan adanya pemanfaatan kerentanan yang teridentifikasi dalam versi tertentu dari software blogging WordPress pada sejumlah besar situs web di Internet.

“Email spam yang berisi link ke situs web yang dibajak ini juga dikirimkan oleh spammer,” kata Wood. “Namun, yang perlu dicatat adalah, pengguna yang memiliki blog yang dihosting di WordPress sendiri terlihat tidak terpengaruh,” ucapnya.

Wood menyebutkan, eksploitasi celah keamanan untuk melayani kepentingan spammer merupakan peringatan keras atas perlunya software yang up-to-date dan melakukan patch terhadap perangkat lunak serta penggunaan rilis terbaru.
